Are you struggling with ideas on how to make this Valentine's Day extra special for your loved one?

Here are a few ideas to steer you on the right track to win his or her affections through some romantic gestures and home-made gifts.

A Picnic for two sets the Heart Affire

Being summer here in the Overberg, take advantage of the beautiful evenings (OK, so the weather has not been great, but we can hope for the best!) and pack a romantic picnic for your partner. Include a good bottle of wine or some bubbly and sit together watching the sunset, whispering sweet nothings into each others ears.
To take this a step further, you will need a friend to help out.
Find a beautiful, romantic spot and set up a little table or blanket - set this with candles, plates, crockery, wine or champagne glasses and of course some rose petals scattered for effect (you might even have a portable CD player hidden behind a bush which your friend can play once your love has set their eyes upon your scene). Have all your food and snacks ready and waiting for your arrival. Then, five minutes before you are due, get your friend to put a bottle of bubbly in an ice bucket next to two champagne glasses on the table/blanket.
Your friend needs to be guarding your Secret Spot until you and your partner arrive (at which time he must very quickly make himself disappear as not to ruin the mood!)

Let this be the start to an unforgettable night creating beautiful memories which will last a lifetime.

Be my Valentine

Write a romantic poem and slip it into your partner's pocket.
Write a love letter, place it in an envelope and seal it with a kiss. Pop it in the postbox and wait for your partner to retrieve it.
Make tiny heart confetti and leave it on top of the visor of your partner's car.
Leave a hand-written love letter under your partner's pillow.
Take an empty medicine bottle and label it “Romance Medicine:Take as needed.” Then write out 50 or so love notes and sexy ideas that could be taken anytime that a cure was needed!!
Write a love note on the bathroom mirror (in erasable marker!!) so that when your partner goes to brush his or her teeth, they see your unexpected message.

You are the Light of my Life

Purchase some glow in the dark stars and spell out a short love note on the ceiling above your bed. You could write “I love you” or just trace out a heart.
When the lights go out that night, your partner will see your luminous letter of love.

Love is like a box of chocolates

Add a personal touch to the usual ribbon-wrapped box of chocolates by filling an empty heart-shaped box with a batch of your own cookies.

Now, if you are no connoisseur at baking, try this fool-proof chilled recipe of bite sized delights.

You will need: Empty heart-shaped box

1 packet marie biscuits, crushed
1/2 cup coconut
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 tin condensed milk
Extra coconut or chocolate sprinkles for rolling

Method:

1. Mix all ingredients together and roll into small balls.
2. Roll balls in extra coconut or chocolate sprinkles
3. Put into fridge and chill

(For balls with a bit of a kick, add a liqueur of your choice to the recipe)
