The Dutch East India Company in 1747 founded Swellendam as an administrative center for the valley of the Breede River. The town was named after the Dutch governor Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife Helena ten Damme. Located at the foot of the Langeberg this historic town with its oak lined streets and Cape Dutch style homesteads has an attractive caravan park and two nature reserves nearby. The Swellendam hiking trial is a must for avid hikers.
