The History of Elim

On entering Elim, the historical charm of the town will be immediately evident with the lime washed cottages and fig trees welcoming you.

This impoverished rural town was founded in 1963 by the Moravian Church of South Africa, and most of the buildings date back to the 19th Century. Interdispersed with the traditional thatched cottages, one can now see brightly painted buildings with corrugated steel roofs.

As you are walking through these streets, be sure to take a look around the local museum where you can get a further taste of the town's history.
If you are passing through on a Sunday, attending the local Church is a must. The Elim Brass Band plays here as well as selected festivals. Church starts at 10:30 sharp – don't be late and miss this spectacular show!
